If we go the bio diesel rout it would be most effective to make it from algae. Ive done alot of looking into it and it would be the best as far as bio diesel. Although the most efficient way to power vehicles would be electric. coal fired plants have the highest efficiency of converting heat to energy and electric motors are more efficient. add in alot of wind farms and the fact that solar is about to sneak up on everyone. There have been some recent advancements in producing solar grade silicon also CIGS tech is going to take off very soon along with a new toshiba battery that charges in under 5 minutes resulting in minimal energy losse, the electric car is coming and few know it. Palm oil!!! Think about. Palm oil is grown in a place that is more radical Muslim than the middle east. Indonesia is not flexing their Palm oil mussels because we have soy and corn. SO Palm Oil will never be a major fuel. Other foods, look at what the present push for food to fuel has done. We are at the maximum limits today. CNG is no different than crude oil. If we use all our natural gas making electricity with it when instead we can use nuclear or coal, we will run out of natural gas. Natural must only be used for home heating and cooking. It could be used for emergency for electric generation. If keep on this track of using CNG for auto fuel, we will be importing natural gas from the middle east in 20 years. Drain water, not a clue what that is.

Not palm oil or natural gas - no way. Palm oil demand is leading to massive deforestation in Indonesia. Natural gas, like oil, is a non-renewable resource. If we shifted our consumption from oil to natural gas, the same thing would happen. Supplies would be strained, prices would skyrocket, and eventually we would run out. both can be used in the short and medium term, we have enough natural gas reserves to power this country, including 60 million cars, for about 60 years. however cng will only be a part of our energy solution. nuclear power, clean coal power, including liquefied coal, solar power, wind power, etc., will all be needed to solve our long term energy issues. cng is being used to power motor vehicles today in fact. many city busses around the country, and in other countries as well, as well as number of fleet vehicles are powered with cng.

CNG is being used right now. I spent 6 years in Dallas working for Rochester Gauges who have a subsidiary called Gas Equipment Company - they do conversions for fleet vehicles to run them on CNG, propane or other "gaseous" fuels. ...and that was nearly 20 years ago.
