Baseball : Is It Bad Sportsmaship To Purposefully Walk A Home Run Hitter
I play softball and I think its just tactics, but the pitchers wont do it (maybe its a pride thing), and they end up giving away grand-slams etc, and it pisses me off. Would you walk someone in this circumstance? ~~~ Louise T ~~~
Best Answer To Baseball Question
From a pitchers stand point it is defiantly a pride thing, but you do everything for your team thats why its called a team effort. I have 8 gloves backing me up so i do whats best for the team.

You gotta do what you gotta do to win the game. As long as its not cheating, do what you have to do.
Answer 3
Intentional walks have always been a legitimate part of the strategy of baseball.
Answer 4
yes, its a part of the strategy of the game. If theres a time in the game where its more advantageous to walk the batter, then I would do that.
Answer 5
I would if the game depended on it... But not just because. It would make the game boring and predictable.
Answer 6
Its common base/softball sense. The team with the most points wins so why would ya want to pitch to a power hitter if it could cost your team the game. No I believe youre right to put em on first.
Answer 7
No, it is not bad sportsmanship to issue an intentional walk. I would rather make a lesser player beat my team.
Answer 8
I would because its my choice. You dont want your ERA to be through the roof do you?Its all strategy.
Answer 9
Its not bad sportsmanship, its just annoying. But yes, if the game was on the line, I would do it.
Answer 10
its respect
Answer 11
In MLB it is not considered "bad sportsmanship" to walk a homerun hitter. In fact it is considered good thinking on the managers part.
Answer 12
no
Answer 13
Your pitcher needs to do what needs to be done to win the game. If the batters continue to hit homeruns, just get a new pitcher.
Answer 14
no its not bad sportsmanship, its part strategy, and yes i would walk the batter, on the other hand, the home run hitter should be protected with another strong hitter!!!
Answer 15
It is totally bad sportsmanship. Its showing up the pitcher and shows a lack of respect. Its also an invitation to get plunked your next time at bat. Also think of this...the hitter who shows up the pitcher may wind up playing on the same team down the road.
Answer 16
From a pitchers stand point it is defiantly a pride thing, but you do everything for your team thats why its called a team effort. I have 8 gloves backing me up so i do whats best for the team.
Answer 17
i totally agree with u. in the end of a game pride doesnt matter, in fact u look like a dumbass 4 giving up a grand slam. if u can save a few runs by walking the batter then id do it.
Answer 18
Mooseny35 is in idiot. Its not bad sportsmanship to walk a HR hitter at all. Dont let the other teams best guy beat you; it only makes you look stupid for allowing it to happen when it was avoidable and predictable. However, in slowpitch, you should be able to locate the pitch well enough the batter cant hit it out. The BB doesnt have to be intentional. Ever heard of the unintentional intentional walk?
Answer 19
Its called strategy. If a game is tied in the ninth inning and the power hitter comes up with first base open, you do the smart thing and dont let him beat you.
Answer 20
Not at all. The intentional walk has been part of the game seemingly forever, and is sometimes a strategically good move.
Answer 21
NO... not at all. even the best homerun hitters make out far more than they get hits.. let alone homeruns (an average of .300 is good... thats 30% hits, let alone the fact that the BEST home run hitters only hit a home run once in 20 or more at bats.) To walk shows fear and respect... and more than anything, it is a strategy. And, that is why baseball is so amazing of a sport.
Answer 22
no it is strategy. especially if there are runners on base and its a close game. if you had a 6+ run lead a homer wouldnt matter, but less than four run lead, it puts the game in reach...walk em
Answer 23
In baseball its all about hate to see them pitch to someone you know can hit it out of the when the score is just makes sense to walk them..
Answer 24
Its strategy. You want to win, dont you? I love softball. Good choice. : )
Answer 25
no thats gay
