Cameras : What Camera Spec For Digitals Tells You What The Lag Time Will Be
I am trying to find a good, around $200 digital camera with a relatively fast lag time between pictures. What is the camera spec that one would look at to make comparisons? Also, when shutter speed is shown in the spec, what is a good shutter speed, what should one be aiming for? ~~~ RoS ~~~

Camera companies do not list those specs. In general all DSLR cameras have shutter lag of less than 50 milliseconds. Point and shoot cameras have lag times of from seconds to 8 seconds depending upon if you use a flash or not. Here is a link with a few cameras shutter lag times listed /shutter-lag-

Well, usually in the specifications you found at most websites and in the box will not specify whats the shutter lag will be. Fortunately for you, some review sites will test the camera and tells you whats the shutter lag. Sites such as steves-digicam or have comprehensive camera review which will tell you everything you want to know about a camera. A shutter speed in the specifications are the shutter speed in the camera itself, usually a fast shutter speed is used to freeze action shots, while slow shutter speed is used during the night or whenever there is lack of light. At this time, I dont think youll need to worry about that. For around $200... I think you could get a Canon Powershot A570 IS (~$170) which have pretty good performance for a camera of its class. dpreview states that the shutter lag for the A570 is seconds between half-pressed shutter button to fully pressed and the time the camera take a shot. It also have seconds lag for a full press lag. Not too bad for its class. Of course there are better cameras out there that has faster lag or even lag that is cannot be perceived by human but they are usually in the DSLR class which is pretty up there in term of price.
