Cameras : What Is The Best Way To Dispose Of Photographic Slides
I have transferred my photographic collection of over 2000 2-inch x 2-inch slides into digital format on DVD discs. Now I want to dispose of the old slides. Some of these slides are personal family photographics and I would want to maintain their privacy. How should I go about disposing of these many slide photographs? ~~~ Robert L ~~~
Best Answer To Cameras Question
I have to agree with fotoace, WHY on Earth would you do such a thing? Do you really want to trust these photos to a DVD? Your slides will never become obsolete, they have already proved that to you. Will some DVD be accessable in 20, 40, 60 years? Electronic technology is never ending. Remember when 8 track tapes were state of the art? Floppy discs? Even DVDs are not even today totally standardized. NEVER destroy any original media such as slides or negatives thinking any fickle modern media is always going to be secure. Many times the "old ways" are NOT bad. Steve
All Answers To Cameras Questions
Answer 1Burn them. The plastic will burn to nothing . Trust me I burn everything. I leave nothing for people to use against me.
Answer 2Dissolve in acetone maybe. (Finger polish remover)
Answer 3Never destroy original images ... why would you do such a thing? If nothing else, give them to a relative that would love to have them.
Answer 4Either find a family member who would love to have them, and give them as a Christmas present....or... Wrap them in aluminum foil an cook them in your barbecue for a long while. They will melt together and disintegrate after a bit.
Answer 5I wouldn't get rid of them so quickly. If your DVDs ever go bad, you'll want those originals again to scan. I personally would just store them in a cool, dry place. But if you are determined to destroy them, burning is one option, except 1) I would be concerned about any chemicals released in the smoke and 2) you'll have to clean up the melted plasticky mess. A simple hole punch through each slide should do the trick; nobody is going to waste their time on slides with a big hole punched through it and thrown in the garbage can.

Answer 7I agree that you should keep the originals. Buy the archival quality pages for slide storage and keep them. Suppose in 30 years there is no technology that will read your DVDs*? At least your descendants will have the original slides and they'll probably be able to scan them to whatever storage media is then current and/or print them. * I remember when the "floppy" was the premier storage device, only to be replaced by the "floppy" which was replaced by the CD and now the DVD. Not to mention the Blu-Ray vs. red laser war which is looming.
Answer 8Well, you could throw 'em in the fireplace, but consider that at some point in the future nobody will be able to play DVDs. Plus, as for privacy, you already tossed that out the window when you made the disks. Up to you, though. V2K1
