no not at all thats what my family has always done. We each get assigned a dish or you can ask to make a certian dish and then we all bring it to whoever is hosting the dinner. But since this is your first year doing it then you can just say that your trying a new thing this year where everyone is going to make a dish of their own and what would they like to bring?

Answer 1
No, I dont think thats wrong at all! Just be polite when you ask..dont make it seem as if they absolutely HAVE to bring a dish!
Answer 2
Every family I know does it! Be open and just say "Its a potluck, so let me know if you are able to bring a dish to pass and Ill let everyone else ; Dont make it mandatory, but let everyone know that it is a potluck. Let people chime in if they WANT to make something (like me, Im the mashed potato master!) Once you have it all covered, you are good and the non-cookers breathe relief or bring chips/beer. You dont want 22 dishes, afterall.
Answer 3
Its a fairly reasonable request, but probably not one that should be asked outright, as this will seem rude. If they are al going to your house for dinner, it would be manners for them to bring a dish and a gift, they shouldnt have to be told. I think all you can do is hope they are generous and thoughtful enough to do this, you dont want to cause any ill feeling by asking them to do it. If they dont, learn from this, and dont have them over next year.
Answer 4
There is nothing wrong with it at all. The people in your family will probably love to be asked to make something. When you call them, tell them youre green beans are so good, could you bring some for dinner this year, theyll be flattered. Just let them all know in advance that it is a pot-luck.

Answer 10
Just say, "Well be serving the main dish and you can bring an appetizer or side ; Just ask; they shouldnt mind. Im kind of upset, because Im going to 3 Thanksgivings and no one wants me to bring anything. People feel good when they can contribute. Also, if Im not having a holiday dinner at my house, it is kind of sad to not get to do anything. Im going to stop asking what I can bring and just bring something.
Answer 11
Maybe Im rude but I dont see anything wrong with making it mandatory. Anyone with any manners should understand you are not working and want to help. It is a tough time for a lot of people this year and family needs to pitch in and help each other that is the family and Christmas spirit. I think sometimes people forget. I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas this year. God Bless.
