I have the same problem! My hair is layered too and its a few centimeters past my shoulders, so I should I have a little experience. Ok, I suggest you straighten your hair before putting it into a ponytail. (Even if it is naturally straight. This helps a lot). Place it a little higher than the nape of your neck. (Unless you need a high bun, then place it a little bit lower than the back of your head) Use gel (any kind would do) to keep the strands in place. Then split your ponytail into two sections. Wrap the sections around eachother. (I find this helps with my hair. If its not the best method for you, just wrap your ponytail around). I usually use a hair net close to my shade of hair to keep the bun from falling out. Use bobbypins to keep the hair net and your bun from coming undone. Spray the bun and the rest of your hair with hairspray and add bobbypins anywhere else you need to keep strands back. I hope I helped!

Use LOTS of hairspray! Start by putting up your hair in a ponytail. Then start spraying the tail with hairspray and twisting it into a coil. When you are coiling the tail to make the shape of the bun, start inserting bobby pins every other inch or so. Finish the shape of the bun, and just keep adding bobby pins to secure the bun. Also, hair nets help with flyaways. I had even shorter hair than you and that technique worked for me!

I have the same hair as you. A high bun or a low bun? but this is what i do for competitions amp; recital: Gather up as much hair as you can into a pony tail, make sure its the correct side part, and dont worry about flyaways. Next, braid the hair into a ponytail. It makes it much more easier to twist. Dont really worry about closing it off with another rubber band, though. Now twist the braid around the rubber band as tight as you can, making it as round as you can. Quickly, before it falls, take your other hand and wrap a rubber band around it to hold it in place. Take a hair net or your hair color and cover your bun, then twist it as you would with a rubber band. Once its as tight as it will go, secure it with a few more rubber bands. You might want to use bobby pins along with it or instead of it. For the layers coming out (if any), bobby pin them back and spray with hairspray and use VERY. LITTLE. gel.
