I take him out right before bed. I won't crate him because he has never been crated before and we both find comfort in sharing a bed (plus I'm sure he would whine like crazy). This has been happening over the past year and did not start suddenly. ~~~ canadian19chick ~~~

My doggies were doing this too. They sleep with us and they would want to go out at 3 am. The secret is taking up ALL food and water at 6 pm. This way, when you let him out to go before bed, he will empty his bladder and probably poop out whatever he ate at 6. When I let me doggies out before bed I tell them "last time out" and they seem to understand what I mean and do everything they need to. Since I've been doing this, they sleep thru the night and don't get up until I do in the morning. He might not like it at first, but once he gets used to it, it will completely solve the problem. Try it, I know it will work!! Happy doggie and good nights sleep!!!

Answer 1I assume that your letting him do his business right before bedtime. If you arn't that will help him immensely. If you are already doing this, then you should crate train him again. He will not go potty in his crate. Hope this helps and good luck!
Answer 2If this has started *suddenly*, then you may want to have your vet check for possible UTI or bladder infection. Otherwise, I agree that a crate would be a good idea. It will help your dog learn how to "hold it" overnight. ADD: Try exercising him more before bedtime. Take him for a walk, or play a round of fetch about 1 hour before its time to go to bed. One last potty break after exercise, then bed. Not only will it tire him out a bit, but the exercise will help to "induce" the "potty". See if that helps a bit :D
Answer 3my dog goes out several times, but before i go to bed i let him out and leave him for good 10 minuets. Get him in to that routine. If it is a small dog maybe it is worth getting a cap/dog flap installed so he can come and go as he pleases
Answer 4Try just ignoring him/her. If he wakes you up by whining, he thinks this is how he gets what he wants. He needs to learn that YOU are the master, and YOU decide when he goes out. If this doesn't work, I would try take him to the vet. My dog used to do this EVERY morning. I stopped listening and now she waits until I am ready to take her out hope this helped. :D good luck!
Answer 5First of all, I sympathize with you. Think about if this is something that has always been a problem or come about recently. Could it be due to changes in routine, environment, diet or could it be behavioral or at worse a medical problem? Has there been a loss or recent move? In any case, write everything down you can think of and see your Vet. I can not stress this enough. Chances are a thorough Dr. will run some blood tests a urinalysis and maybe even an abdominal xray/ultrasound depending. I am not trying to scare you, I just think that 3years old is very young and I am sure you want your baby to be with you for many years to come. Answer 6I know my dog used to wake me up every night when he was like 2 years old but, I started taking him out to pee every nigh right before I went to bed, and then I would put him in a doggy kennel that we had in our kitchen. After a while he learn that if he didn't pee before he went to bed he would have to hold it. He doesn't have any more problems with sleeping all night without waking me. You got to think of them like little kids some times! :)

Answer 8I wish I knew the answer my baby dose that two but she is 7 years old all I can say is take your dog for a walk earlier so by the time your ready to go to sleep she won't be growling or pouting to go outside
Answer 9Glad you let him sleep with you I let my 4 dogs sleep with us and I let them out right before we go to bed and they do their jobs and come in and when we go to bed they are down for the night but I leave them outside till they do both jobs and it usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes for them to come to the door to come back in. try leaveing him out longer. I go to bed about 10:00 so at 9:00 I let my little monsters out and they come back up to the door about 10 or so and then off to bed we go. Good luck
