i don't understand the physics involved with the trapping of greenhouse gases. when the ozone is compromised, do gases start to exit out of the atmosphere? is science working on ways to alleviate the gas? ~~~ davewicker ~~~

CO2 is dense and does not float off into space, gravity keeps the gasses close the earth, though some without doubt do escape. There are ways to reduce emissions which are well documented and we will see hydrogen cars and the like coming into existence in the near future for sure. Power stations are changing to nuclear or increased efficiency gas. In the UK most of the coal fires have gone and now everyone is either gas or electric. Oil will eventually run dry so we the scientists are already looking into its replacement. In the meantime using re-newable energy such as wind, solar and water are a good alternative. I can see many people having solar panels on their roofs and wind turbines attached to their property and those who are lucky enough to be near water will have a water wheel. Things are being done but you must understand that these are major changes to the way people think and expect. We have some hard decisions to make and they are just around the corner for sure.

Answer 1its not the trapping of "greenhouse gas" green house gas is a catchphrase for the gasses in the atmosphere that reflect heat back to the earth's surface, essentially trapping the heat on the earth. Gasses don't just start to exit the atmosphere, gravity keeps it where it is. The Ozone layer is a thin layer of oxygen in the form of O3, instead of O2. What the ozone layer does is reflex a certain percentage of energy from the sun back into space. It generally reflects ultraviolet. A hole in the ozone layer causes more ultraviolet rays to penetrate the atmosphere causing burns and cancer and flood, and locusts, and all sorts of bad things. And yes, science is working ways to alleviate it - for a profit, of course.

Answer 3It can be done and would be a good thing. But, it seems no one wants to remove CO2 from the atmosphere even though it would reduce the amount of "greenhouse" gas in the atmosplere. It seems everyone wants to reduce the amount of CO2 being dumped into the atmosphere but they cannot understand how removing CO2 from the atmosphere can be done or that it would help. Its not all that hard to do by the way.

Answer 5Water vapor is the major greenhouse gas. No way you want to mess with that. It varies in weight and volume by 10 to 15 % all by itself and that's the way its always been. CO2 is .04% of the atmosphere. Do the math. Reducing that won't have any effect either. Most of the bad stuff in the atmosphere is in larger particulates like silica (sand: known carcinogen ) and heavy metals (man produced). Those aren't yet tied to the greenhouse affect but are proven to be harmful to life.
