A friend you can tell anything to. Anything. You will learn in time when you share personal info. But don't share anything you don't want anyone else to know until you know darn well you can trust that person. Make sure they are doing the same thing. If you find that you are sharing a common interest or bond (or problem) also, then you will most likely end up friends. Friends are people that trust each other with personal info, in my opinion. But again, be careful with this, especially at work. Some people are totally untrustworthy.
