Garden Landscape : What Is The Best Way To Get Rid Of Saplings Of Trees That Spring Up In Your Lawn
The saplings are evil little buggers. They are small enough you think you can pull them up but they have tap roots which spread out about 12-16 inches either side of each sapling. Pulling them up is ruining the grass, not to mention my back! Does anyone know of anything other that what you can buy at the usual stores to get rid of them permanently? Over the counter weed killer doesnt phase them. We had a tree like it taken out of our lawn but our neighbor has one just like it. They are newlyweds and probably cant afford to take it out. ~~~ K's Mom ~~~
Best Answer To Garden Landscape Question
The easiest way to remove them is to use a small hand shovel. Push it in as far as it will go on each side of the plant. This severs the roots radiating out. Then either push the trowel in on an angle so that it severs the tap root or pull it up and clip with a pair of small prunign shears. If you cannot pull it up, just push the shears into the soil around the tree and snip, just make sure to clean the shears after use.
