It shows that the culture was beginning to show signs of Christianity (constant references to a single God), but still had trouble letting go of the ingrained paganistic/materialistic values. Examples of Christianity: - Beowulf is Christ-like figure who dies to save his people - Divine intervention (Deus ex machina) that constantly saves Beo, such as the random appearances of swords at crucial times Paganism/materialism: - Grendels arm as a trophy - Burial ritual with gold/weaponry - building of Meade Hall I would say more but I cant seem to remember all the examples off the top of my head. I dont remember much about the book, but it was an oral story passed on and told by story tellers that would go from village to village and tell the story as entertainment. im not sure what you mean by what is Beowulf its a story. The origins are what i said above. As for aobut hte culture of the time. That stories were passed orally and therefore would be changed from time to time, what they believed in etc read the book also use cliff notes AS A SUPPLEMENT ONLY it will be able to help you answer some of these questions
