Horses : How Do You Clean Your Grooming Tools
I have been riding for quite a while now but I still have one horse-y problem I can't solve; how to best clean your grooming tools and brushes. I want to keep my tools clean and sanitary but I have yet to find the most effective way. I am hoping for something relatively simple that won't wear down my brushes if I clean them a lot. I have brushes with both rubber and wood grips, and a plastic and metal hoof pick. Thanks for any input =) ~~~ Dom ~~~

In between washing them with hot, soapie water, I used the spray on dry shampoo for dogs. On the wood I use old english furniture polish with lemon oil. Hope it helps!

Answer 1Cleaning your grooming tools will cause wear and tear. If you are not grooming nothing but one horse then a mild soap and water is ok but if you groom other animals that do not live together I would use a 10/90 bleach and water.
Answer 2I have the same problem. Let me just say though the horse world is awesome but just face it - it's not clean! You can rinse you hook picks, curries, and grooming bin (or whatever you put your grooming stuff in and i suggest you do this because it helps to keep the brushes clean too. I don't think you can clean brushes other than knocking as much dirt off as possible and replacing them every 6 months or so.

Answer 4Water and a light soap.
Answer 5Just put them in a bucket of soapy water, soak for awhile, use the brushes to scrub each other, and rinse well. Let them dry in the sun. I've been doing this for 8+ years, and it hasn't damaged any of the tools, including the wood handled brushes.
Answer 6I tend to use Ivory dish soap because it's mild in warm water. I've used this on my brushes and all and have one brush that is leather bound and horsehaired bristled. This brush will be 40 years old this coming year, so I guess I'm dong something right. I also use this brush to really thoroughly clean my saddles too! Of course the newer, leather bound brushes aren't of the same quality, but they do still hold up when doing this, then I simply use saddle conditioner on the leather parts. Murphys would work on your wooded backed brushes. Rubber brushes, just let them soak, clean them out with a sponge or small bristled cleaning brush, then rinse them off.
Answer 7I'm partial to using lysol. Clean as much hair as you can get out of your brushes by scraping them with the curry. Give them a good blasting with the hose, then fill a bucket with water and put in a pretty good splash of lysol, and put your brushes in. Let them sit a while. Dump them, rinse them thoroughly, and then set them out to dry in the sun. I've never had trouble with it wearing down or damaging my brushes in any way AND it kills bacteria and fungus.... You can also substitute bleach for lysol....
Answer 8always clean your brushes like once a month. They will give a horse fungus if you don't. I use bleach water on my synthetic brushes and soak them over night. On my natural or animal hair brushes i use vinigar water. It smells bad but it works and it wont ruin the fibers. Rinse them out really well and let them dry for a day or so.
