Horses : How Many Acres Of Pasture Is Sufficient For One Horse For About 7 Months When There Is No Snow
Also, does anyone know of good books to read to learn more about this subject and/or websites, etc. Sorry, here is some more info. The property we are considering has 3 acres in hay pasture with room to do further cross fencing and planting. It is located in a semi arid area, but irrigation is installed and in use. ~~~ Betty ~~~
Best Answer To Horses Question
It depends upon the quality and density of the grass. A good pasture with high quality grass that has adequate rain 1-2 acres would be enough. The problem is in dry years or poor grass it gets overgrazed.

Answer 2I would tell you for an average pasture take 3-4 acres and divide them into 2-3 pastures...just a little over an acre each. Then water the ones the horse is not in and rotate. That will keep you constintly having fresh grass and will last you 7 months easily!
Answer 3There are so many answers to your question. Where do you live? How good is the pasture grass? Do you get plenty of rainfall to sustain a pasture? I would want a minimum of 5 acres per horse in most places. It's more here due to the desert-like climate and low rainfall.
Answer 4Depending on what the horse will be fed, (grass, hay, grain, etc.) and the quality of everything - 1 acre would be the minimum. There are many books about the subject, look at a local book store in the Pets/Horses section, or look on Good luck.
Answer 5Like others have mentioned it depends on the quality and quantity of the grass in your area. I read a book a few years ago called horse keeping on a small acreage or something like that. At the time I had a small 5 acre place and it gave good information as far as rotating pastures and cross fencing info.
