Horses. What Are Good Ways To Bond With Your Horse.

I'm sharing a horse with someone else and I'll be mounting her 4 times / week to prepare for competitions. I want to have a good and strong relationship with her, but she's a pretty hard headed horse who also doesn't always enjoy being brushed. Any suggestions? ~~~ Gab ~~~

Best Answer To Horses Question

Hang around in her stall, feed her a few carrots, brush her, talk to her and love on her. This is what I do with my gelding. It helps in gaining trust in your horse and helps your horse gain trust in you.

Answer 1

Spend a lot of time with her, stay at the barn as long as you can and just really get her to trust you, and WANT to be around you. Don't go there, get her and start brushing her if that is what she doesn't like. Hang out with her like it is one of your friends, read a book in her stall. Bond with her like it is a new friend! I bought a PMU mare, and this is what I am doing with her, it is really working and I can tell she is starting to really like me, and trust me!

Answer 3

Some horses may not act like they enjoy brushing but I think that deep down some of them do- as long as you dont spend hours just fidgeting with them and doing everything in a day. I'd brush for 15 minutes-- long enough to get the job done but not so long that the horses get annoyed from standing there. Frequent treats are always nice too-- for example I always give my horse a treat after the curry comb, hard brush, soft brush and then after hoof picking if he is good.. You can also divide it up spend one day doing her tail, another doing her mane, another giving her a bath and then grazing her. A very good way to build up a bond is grazing the horse and just hanging out-- i've found that some horses would rather skip out on being pampered and just be grazed.

Answer 4

Both answers are good so far. In my experience spending time with her is the best thing you can do. If your barn has a small ring that is not used you can go there without riding and just spend time together like she would with another horse in the pasture. One way to gain the trust and bonding is by "Joining-up with ; / Some people think this is hog-wash, but I do this all the time with my Quarter-Arab. When I got him he was rather headstrong and even gave a couple of trainers some trouble. Now when we are there he will not leave my side and I can just about walk anywhere without a lead rope and he will follow me. (I still keep it handy in case I need it or if a distraction arises.) Good luck and just enjoy her.

Answer 5

I was watching a horse video and it said a very powerful way to bond with it is spend at least 2-8 hours with them just sitting in a chair and letting them walk around and ponder...

Answer 6

sometimes if available at your facility take her out for a nice hand walk (walking her on a lead line) Maybe stop to let her graze on some grass. If you go there to just ride and work her she will sort of start to think of you negatively, however if you go and give her something she like she will start to anticipate you. She will be like when is that girl coming that takes me out of my stall and lets me walk around. If she is out in a field maybe go up to her and hook a line on her but just stand beside her and let her continue to eat. Maybe then bring like a dandy or body brush and give her a light brushing. My mare loves to go out to her in a pasture with a curry and she will stand there while I curry her neck and whithers like I was another horse grooming her. However if I have her tied up like we are getting ready to go for a ride she does not enjoy the grooming as much because it means something different to her.

Answer 7

What i think that you should do is spend time around her and get in her skin. What i do is lunge her with out a halter and make her walk up to you. Make her walk right by your side and make her lay down. I love to do this with are three horses. how to train her to do this You should be in a round Arnie and lunge he with out any thing on her. make her come to you by siting on your but and she should come to you. If not then make he run around Intel she does. Walk around and make Sherie that she stays right with you. If she does not then make her run she will learn fast. This will help a lot it is so fun. go to this to teach your horse to lay down. hope this helps Email me to let me know at poodlesncats@

Answer 8

Go to your local library. Check out some tapes or DVDs on Pat Parelli Natural horsemanship. There's one on play the Seven Games. Try this and you will have a buddy and a friend. Also look at Dennis Reis and Clint Anderson. They all about the same style.

Answer 9

My gelding was abused before I got him, and we've been working quite a bit lately on bonding. He loves to go out and graze with me holding him. Especially after my hubby just got done mowing. He's my lawn sweeper, cleaning up the mower clippings. Who needs a mower bagger?? :-) Anyway, while he's grazing I just stand there and scratch all his favorite spots. He loves it on his neck under his mane, under his neck and on his withers. You just have to scratch her all over to find her favorite spots. Maybe she would rather just be left alone, and not scratched though. Just watch her emotions, like her eyes, tail and ears. If they all start to swishing, then stop scratching her and just let her graze. The way to a horse's heart is through their stomach. :)

Answer 10

Here are some simple ways for you and your horse to bond together. lunging her in a round pen or on a lunge line in a arena. Use commands like you would as if you where riding her. I do that with all my horses that I start off training. It builds trainer/horse bond and discipline. riding her on a trail ride or a ride where she has a little more freedom. Like let the reins loose a little. Don't use a riding crop [but still make her do what you want to do, just make it a bit easier for her]. may sound really silly because she doesn't like to be brushed but give her a bath! Or take a sponge with cold water on it and soak her down on a hot day. Then walk her around and let her sun dry. I do this with my horse and she acts like I just saved her. her a little extra oats or treats after a ride. Talk her her after you ride her. Just little things like that can help. ~Good Luck!

Answer 11

Learn about round penning using John Lyons or Kenny Harlow methods. This will teach the horse that you can both control and reward him. A reward consists of the horse being given the opportunity to relax. While spending time brushing or giving treats might be enjoyable to a horse, it doesn't teach them any respect for you.

Answer 12

this depends on the horse. some horses like to ride for bonding and others like feeding just a hug from a specail friend. good luck!

Answer 13

maybe sit and pet her and just massage like all around her body (if shes a kicker stay away from behind her) and just visit her alot and get to know her thats the best way i think

Answer 14

This might just work with drafts because of the size (comfort without saddle and all), but I sit on Nik's back when he's eating in the pasture. Gets him used to me, and doesn't bother him a bit. He just goes on with eating. **He knows that if there's reins attatched, he doesn't get to eat though. None of that eating while on the trail stuff :)

Answer 15

Go to this site: Sylvia Scott Natural Horsemanship. Her training ranch is in Virginia. She is excellent. She's a horse trainer and has pages of questions/answers and you'll totally find what you need there. I go there all the time for this or that.

Answer 16

Go for walks together, really! I took my rather aloof geldign for long walks to creeks, etc. in the area. We'd graze a little on the way, and just be really relaxed about everything. No pressure, no expectations, just walking, and eating (for him). He is now really loving and attached. He talkes to me whenever he sees me, and is a lot more trusting. If the mare is a handful, just use a nose chain, it still works, even if you have to resort to that. (I had to use one at first)
