Horses : What Breeds Of Horses Have Slow Growing Hoofs
I have had my mare for about 5 years and only need to get her feet trimmed every 6-9 months. My farrier agrees that they are slow growing hoofs and said that some breeds have this trait. I had no idea this was the case. She is unregistered but now I am wondering what breed she is. Do you know what breeds have this slow foot growth trait - what other traits do they have...I'd love to know. Thank you in advance for your reply. Just a note: Her feet are really tidy, healthy (according to my long time farrier) strong and black that hardly get chipped between trimmings. I have never had to shoe her for the type of riding I do. We live in Southern Alberta, Canada and our soil is mostly dirt (some weeds!!) no rocks and no extra moisture this year. She has never come up soar or laim and seems generally content. ~~~ It's Just Me ~~~
Best Answer To Horses Question
I have never heard of specific breeds having slow growing hooves as a character trait. Usually slow growing hooves is a sign of unbalanced nutrition and insufficient protein. Keratin is made up of protein and it's growth is directly related to that and the intake of mineral required for a normal growth rate.

Answer 2the only "slow growing hooves" that I have heard of are on mustangs, but that is only because they run around in the wild so much on rocky/rough ground, they naturally wear their hooves down.
Answer 3you must not put shoes on your horse. i never heard of that trait either. i suggest getting more regular trims it only helps to kep their feet healthy and in good shape. it also keeps them sounder longer.
Answer 4I have Morgans Mustangs. I don't shoe any of them. They both are known to have very hardy hooves. I can say on the ave their hooves don't grow that fast. I hope this helps a little.
Answer 5how fast the horse's hoof grows doesnt really have anything to do with the breed. if your horse is barefoot try to get a barefoot trimmer to come out to trim your horse. if your horse has shoes, then there wont really be any growth because shoes dont allow the foot to grow. how fast the horses hoof grows is directly related to how much the horse moves and what they move on. if your horse is on sand or soft ground then the growth will be on the hoofs bars ( things that are beside the frog and connected to the heels) but if the horse is on rock or hard ground the growth will be more on the outer edge of the hoof. but breed doesnt really have anything to do with it:) i hope this helped
Answer 6I have never heard of a specific breed with slow growing hooves. Certainly some individual horses might have slow growth, and in the winter time, most horses tend to slow down their hoof growth as well.
