Hi im 14, I want to buy some stock shares as i am interested in raising money for university. I have a few thousand dollars I can afford to play with here... If I am not able to buy shares, do you think I am able to do mutual funds? If not, at what age? You would have to open a UGMA account with a firm. It would be in your name but then an adult has discretionary authorization. The best thing for you would to open a 529 plan which is meant for saving for college. To open an account for yourself, you need to be 18

The account can be in your name, but the rules say that an adult has to make the decisions. 18 is minimum, to open an an account on your own. You do not have enough money for this kind of investment, based on what you are trying to do. If your dad is knowledgable of the stock market, he should be telling you the same thing.
