I just bought an air conditioner, and the plug got so hot it started to melt and turn the socket brown. The air conditioner says 120V and 10amps. How do I find out what will work in my old apartment? ~~~ curious c ~~~

What you are experiencing is a loose connection in the wall socket. This causes the plug to arc and heat up. Replace the wall socket. Check your fuse/breaker box for the circuit rating. If you were exceeding the rating on the circuit, the breaker or fuse would blow.

The problem is with the wiring in the apartment, not your A/C, I would be careful using it until the problem was addressed, it is a fire hazard as it is now.

If youre in america, its 125V, and 15 amps. Your unit overheated because of the amps, get a converter.

you cant find out about the amp but you can use a volt meter to read volt. amp read when load is apple to it by a device
