Maintenance Repairs : How Do I Make My Home Central Gas Forced Air Heater More Quieter

I hear the motor when it first fires up , sometimes feel there is something I can do to make it not so loud. When I push it with my hand its sounds much better. Im calling it a motor, it looks kind of shaped like a black horn. I tried turning the nuts down tighter but they seem just to spin. I have heard other much older ones than mine and they sound quiet. please help ~~~ cliffhangers007 ~~~

Also try cleaning the fan blades, or squirrel cage (whatever you have) which could cause it to run uneven. Then look for the oil ports on the motor and lubricate it. Ours was quite loud when we first moved into this house - I removed the motor and cleaned all the gunk off the squirrel cage blower, then lubricated it. Now I have a quiet 25 year old furnace.

That is the combustion chaimber blower, all you need to do is change the gaskets and put on new screws, get the screws a bit bigger than the ones you have right now, take one out and go to home depot and compare sizes, also If they do not have the gasket you need, get heat resistant silicone, they do have it I bought it before....

Check there is no collapsed duct work or restrictions to the air flow, this can cause undesired back pressure on the motor. If the system has filters ensure they are clean and in good condition. The fans have bearings, they could be worn causing the excessive noise, or the fan wheels them selves may be out of balance due to dust build up over time, requiring cleaning or in some cases may require replacing.
