Best Answer To Maintenance Repairs Question
Your purchase depends on a lot of variables. Can you get the wood cheaply? Can you harvest the wood yourself? Are you willing to clean ashes out of the burner and dispose of them? Are you willing to feed the fire when needed, at all hours of the night? Are you willing to pay to have your chimney cleaned and inspected regularly? Will your insurance cover you in case of a fire? Are you willing to put up with a wood pile in your yard? If you answered yes to all the above questions, you can save money by installing a wood burner. If not, stay with your present system.

I have one that uses pellets. It has an auger feed from a hopper that holds a 50 pound sack. You get almost 100% combustion. 50 pounds leaves a couple handfuls of dust. You can get pellets delivered by the ton.

Heres some off the top of my head. Pros: - Heat when the power is out (most models anyway) - Fuel cost control. You can buy it cut and split for a premium cost, or harvest it yourself for real cheap. Options in between depending on how much physical labor you are willing to bring. Theres a saying, "The man who cuts his own wood is warmed ; Cons: - Homeowners insurance premium implications - Fuel irregularities. Oak is a great fuel, but if you are in the west youll only have access to the lesser softwoods. - Wont light itself - Toddlers can be scary around them Neutral: - Ash removal. Not difficult just has to be dealt with - Some prefer the feel and smell. Others hate it. Matter of personal taste. - Cleaning the flue. Well furnaces, boilers, and heat pumps arent maintenance free either. Im sure there are more points to hash over. Regards!
