in BOTH cases, the concept of marriage symbolizes Gods relationship with His people. In both Hebrew and Chrsitian scriptures, the concept of marriage is often used as an example of how God views his relationship to the people of earth, with God being The Groom (the head of the family, the provider, the one responsible for the moral and ethical "tone" of the family) and The People being the Bride ( the Helper, the companion). More often, the failure of The People to honor God is described as "adultery", and in really severe cases prostitution. When Gods People turn from him to other "gods" (Baal, Molech, professional sports, hobbies, "work-aholism", pornography") it is decribed as an "adultery" -- having a relationship with someone who is not your spouse. One of the intents of marriage is to represent a Godly relationship on earth. The Groom is expected to be The Provider, The Protector, The Head of the family -- As God is Head of His People on earth. And as God provides the moral "path" for His People, The Groom is expected to be trained and skilled in providing a morally correct path for his family. that means knowing and honoring Gods Word, and putting theology into practice in his everyday life. [ The New Testament puts it this way: "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her" [Ephesians 5:25] (The Church here is used to mean Gods People) ] The Bride is expected to be The Helper, as that is the role for which she was initially created: "The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for ; " [Genesis 2:18] While the husband is out "providing", AND preparing himself to be the moral and spiritual leader of the family. the wife should be taking care of the rest of the family affairs. But this does NOT mean that the husband barks orders and the wife runs to obey. A HELPER works in concert with The Leader! The Leader is expected to ALSO work towards the good of the family -- paying bills, washing dishes, doing laundry, changing diapers -- while The Helper is doing other tasks. Many marriages fail when one of both of the couple fail to fulfill their God-given roles. Most often it is due to poor leadership on the part of the husband, who fails to fulfill is duties to lead by example, working alongside his wife to build the family, and not just set back, drink beer, watch NASCAR, and give orders. this forces the wife to take up the slack in the leadership role -- a role which she SHOULD NOT be attemtping! other times, it is a strong-willed woman who takes away the leader ship of her husband. Our feminist society supports this, and through this feminism is a major cause of marital discord. The role of the wife is as HELPER, and she should not take over the leadership role unless and until the hudband gives it up. When women replace the husband in the leadership role, the marriage is in grave trouble. this ALSO holds true in single-parent households!
