Mental Health : Whats The Difference Between A Mixed Bipolar State And Depression With Extreme Anxiety
Seagull - do a bit of research into bipolar disorder before you judge it. Bipolar is only "another word for depression" if you think that mania is completely normal and not part of an illness at all. I asked this question because I'm bipolar, and I'm experiencing some odd syptoms - feeling depressed but also shaky and energetic, with racing thoughts, and I'm not sure if it's a mixed state or anxiety. ~~~ laurarara ~~~

ok, let's try to explain it. it's not easy, even for professionals to diagnose a mixed state of BAD. this is the ICD-10 criteria: 'The patient has had at least one authenticated hypomanic, manic, depressive, or mixed affective episode in the past, and currently exhibits either a mixture or a rapid alteration of manic and depressive symptoms. ' rapid alteration means that the mood swing (sad-happy/irritable) last for less that 4 hours (usually it's: one minute - literraly- the person is laughing, another - crying). while in agitated depression (this is how 'extreme anxiety' can be described)- the person remains usually serverly depressed at all times. there are also other symptoms usually associatted with both states alterating as mood swings (enegry levels, low self-esteem/grandiosity, cry/inapproprate laugh, etc) agitation in depression is usually an activity without any goal, while in mixed state - if you ask the person she/he would tell you what s/he is doing - usually is has the flavour of hypo-or mania (and in somehow it does make sens). the way you describe it, it can also be interpreted as you coming out of one phase (either into recovery or into the other phase) - it depends how long has it been going for

Answer 1Nothing, bipolar is just a trendy buzz word for depression it sounds so much better if celebs are bipolar rather than suffering from depression.
Answer 2Bipolar is where your mood fluctuates between happy and very depressed. whereas extreme anxiety can cause depresson, an example being OCD, which is an anxiety disorder, this often makes sufferers depressed.

Answer 4Hello, Well firstly I have to admit that I'm not sure what a mixed bipolar state is, although it sounds quite complex to me. I do however know what depression with extreme anxiety is, and your description does not fit the experience of severe anxiety. You certainly wouldn't be feeling energetic if you were extremely anxious- anxiety saps your energy, both mentally and physically. There are also a whole multitude of both physical and psychological symptoms that you don't mention. Another important difference is that you never experience elation with depression and anxiety- quite the opposite in fact. Hope this helps somewhat.
Answer 5Put simply a mixed state is when you have a low mood, quite often with suicidal thoughts, with energy, irritability (in some people). So your head thinks depressed and your body thinks can't stop. Awful place to be in and I get there a lot when I'm ill. I think in me it's linked to rapid cycling.
