Answer 3I'm pretty sure folding it up and burying it would construe no disrespect to the flag.
Answer 4Yes, either of those places or a boy Scout troop will do it for you. There is a ritual that involves cutting the flag into small pieces, wrapping each in tissue and placing them gently on the fire. It's great that you respect our flag and wish to do this correctly.
Answer 5I agree take it to your local American legion or like Veterans post. Sometimes, on the fourth of July they have huge flag decommissioning ceremonies. They are an awesome site to see, so you can wait and bring it to one of those if you have one locally. Pretty much they build this giant fire and put all the flags in them, and its a celebration to the troops, and theres usually lots of activities like honor guards, tributes, entertainment. They are great fun. But thanks for your respect to our flag, i amsure our troops would appreciate it that some people do care!
Answer 6Give them to a local Boy Scout or Girl Scout troop or a place like the VFW. I am a Girl Scout leader and my troop does flag retirement cermonies every time we go to camp. We rely on donations throughout the year to do it.
Answer 7If you can't or won't burn it (which is the simplest, but not necessarily respectful way) then take it to the American Legion. They'll retire it with honor and respect.
Answer 8Great question and I'm glad you asked. The American flag can be burned (the only legal way to destroy it). But there are laws governing the correct way to do it. The answerer who suggested taking the flags to the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in your city is right. I am a member of my post's Ladies Auxiliary and have witnessed the yearly Flag Burning Ceremony many, many times. If you have never seen Old Glory destroyed (even in this proper fashion) it is indeed something awesome to behold. Even if you are as tough as they come, it will bring on a good case of the goosebumps. Thank you for your concern about our nation's emblem. The folks at the VFW will help you with this duty.
Answer 9The Flag Code of the United States states the following: When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.
Answer 10take them to a fire station, elks lodge, moose lodge, amvets, or vfw and they will do it for you.
Answer 11hand it over to the nearest Boy Scout troop; the Boy Scouts of America is one of the few organizations authorized to retire flags
Answer 12Bring them to us at the VFW, we'll properly retire them for you.
