from what i have been told in order to begin a patent process you first must request a patent search through the . patent office, which takes a couple thousand dollars and quite some time and yes i do believe that you must have a schematic or prototype.

If you have the time, patience and knowhow, you can do a patent search yourself. No, you dont need a working model, or even a mock-up. Engineering drawings will suffice.
