Most people set up a spreadsheet to do this. Microsoft Excel is good, but if you download Open Office you get the same thing for free.

We have been using Excel, but we havent been good at keeping it updated. We are moving to an intergated system using SAP Business One, this should intergate with purchasing, manufacture and sales to maintain the inventory levels.

Depending on the size of your inventory (if it is small) you could use a spreadsheet - either MS excel or Open Office (free). However if you have a large inventory, then I would consider using database software - MS Access on PC or File Maker Pro on the Mac. For tracking stocks, I would use both a spreadsheet and a portfollio tracker such as the ones that are offered for free by Google and Yahoo.

Id recommend using inFlow Inventory. Its a professional software thats pretty full-featured, but at the same time intuitive and easy to use. Its also straightforward to install. They have a free edition that can be used forever and has all the features of their standard edition, only with a limit of 100 total products/customers. If your inventory exceeds this you can always upgrade to the standard edition which is priced fairly low. Its worked out well for me and on their forum they have customers that have turned away from other leading programs.
