Other Politics Government. How Much Economic Aid Does The UK Give To African Countries Each Year.

I have been looking online for this information without success. I was recently listening to a radio talk show and someone mentioned the amount of economic aid we give to Tanzania ( ! ?) every year. It was a surprising amount but Id like to see it confirmed somewhere. Ideally, I;d like to see it broken down so we can see how much economic aid the UK is giving to each African country. Does anyone know where I can obtain this information? ~~~ Jewel of Medina ~~~

Britain gives too much, thats for sure. I remember 30 years ago giving to what was the politically incorrect term Black Babies essentially the Catholic Missions in Africa. Every school in Ireland donated millions over decades, coupled with Millions by Governments and by NGOs. We must have given Africa Billions if not Trillions. Now by that reckoning, there should be fresh running water in every village, complete Health Care, Mass education, Vibrant working cities, first class transport systems and accountable governments in Africa, NGOs would not be needed Africa should be the success beckon of the world. We have given billions in aid since the end of colonialism, for what? Africa is still a mess. Africa and Africans are the worlds ;special needs children, we help them and they never improve. How much longer can this go on? So in other words, let the Africans sort their own problems out.

I have myself posted similar questions many times about this continued aid from what we see on news broadcasts the countries are very much in the same state as when =grandma contributed=, why cannot they do more to help themselves, millions have been poured into the countries such as Africa where has it gone? , this cannot continue, people in the uk many have lost homes , jobs, and dignity why cannot these do goodies that ask for even more money for the african continent see the wood for the trees and divert their attention the the plight of our own country

Answer 4

What needs to be remembered is the amount given in aid to African countries is very small compared with the overall budget for the country. An amount of Aid given, is wasteful and pointless - particularly when it goes straight into the hands of governments, and never comes out again. However, I know from first hand experience that this is not always the case. Many many non governmental organisations (NGOs) get money from the UK government. If you look at .uk you will see thay UK Aid money goes to projects helping: Gender Equality, Human Rights and HIV awareness. Projects like the Grameen Bank and Make Trade Fair have received quite a bit of help from the UK govt. The DFID website lists their plans and involvement in each country. Have a look at these before deciding whether its worth spending the money or not. Anyway: some facts. In 2007/08 total GPEX (gross public expenditure was £6,027m. This represents a decrease of £1,565m (21 per cent) on 2006/07. In 2007/08 India continued to receive by far the greatest amount of DFID bilateral assistance to an individual country (£275m in 2007/08), with Ethiopia in second place (£140m) and Sudan third (£135m). In total, the top twenty recipients of DFIDa€™s bilateral assistance accounted for 61 per cent of DFIDa€™s total bilateral programme
