What is the history behind a communities minister, is it an old position? I AM AWARE that it was formerly known as the Minister of State for Communities and Local Government, but how long had it existed? Is it another creation of Nu Labours? Or is it a reflection of multiculturalism that we now have communities instead of one community? Or has it a long history? Please do not guess, and if possible can you provide a source? The role is one whereby local communities are encouraged to be more involved in running things locally and the real power behind giving more authority to the local community rather than leaving it with distant District/Borough and County Councils. More local Councils are being given greater powers to deal with local issues than ever before and the Community in Power Bill will probably be the best bit of legislation in decades to empower local people.

In 1997 the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister was set up to co-ordinate a wide-range of Government posts. Following the 2005 General Election it was decided to break this up into a number of smaller Departments, one of which was Communities and Local Government (DCLG). One of the DCLGs main responsibilities is working with Local Government). Other roles include policies for reducing anti-social behaviour, housing, and planning. The Ministers in the Department, which is headed by the Secretary of State, Hazel Blears MP, give you some idea of what DCLG does; they are: Minister for Housing (Margaret Hodge MP), Minister for Local Government (John Healey MP), Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Community Cohesion and Fire Services (Sadiq Khan MP) and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Planning (Iain Wright MP), a third Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Baroness Andrews, handles all DCLG work in the House of Lords.
