Empathy and Altruism. Sympathy can be a combination of Empathy and Altruism. Empathy is the ability to put yourself in the shoes of another - to recognize the common human condition and how you would feel if you were in their situation. Altruism is recognizing the needs of others and doing what you can to help them - . feeding the hungry. Some people use religion as a moral guide, but examine your religion to determine whether it encourages Empathy and Altruism, or discourages it. Religions that encourage hate and division are immoral. Religions that encourage love and brotherhood for all of humanity are moral.

(These are the words of the apostle Paul) To answer your question, the only thing that makes any person good is the power of the Holy Spirit indwelling him/her by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ unto salvation. I suppose people can make good or bad moral choices whether or not they are Christians by using their innate conscience, but the heart of man is by nature wicked, and good will not prevail ultimately in someone who has not surrendered his/her life to Christ--eventually he/she will be tempted to sin, even if it is just the sin of pride and self-righteousness.

Sympathy is a part of empathy. You cant have sympathy without empathy. I think youre about right, though, that is the important one.
