Well to choose what one has to know what are the goals ... well if one treats success in terms of materialistic gains like money, power, car, houses, bank balance etc. then he/she must be a materialistic....... be if he/ she wants to he be happy, joyful, surrounded by good friend then he/she must be spiritual......... but I would like to add one thing that being on the ground reality is that in order to live in this world that is materialistic and sustain properly one cannot be just spiritual only... he/she needs to be little materialistic atleast for earing their living and feeding on a square meal a day, sleeping properly... but he/she must know their limits to be materialistic..

lets look at it from this point of view: The Art of Living foundation does a lot of charity and volunteer work. It also does yoga and spiritual teaching by guru sri sri ravi shankar. In the recent years, they went to help some victims of a HUGE natural disaster that devastated the coast of a certain place. They taught both meditation and also provided supplies to them in aid. Can you tell me why? because being spiritual is being one with the energy, the power inside you in harmony. Only then can you take charge of the situation well and good. But then, aid is also important because if you dont give monetary and food aid, they wont be healthy and have their demands met as sick people, as starving people. You see, both are required to live a happy, fulfilling life. I am pretty sure that you cant live as an ascetic WITHOUT any amount of material needs, even they need to have something to cover themselves with, to survive, and at the same time, a little amount of spirituality in our daily life is also important. therefore, we need a balance of both

Materialism can not give stable happiness..... spiritual approach to life is a must for that. However, ideally one should first attain reasonable success materially before turning to spirituality, otherwise our fickle mind will keep sliding all the time to materialistic issues with a feeling of deprivation. Spirituality however should not be confused with either devotion to God or Religion...... spirituality in my view is to look at life in terms of non-materialistic achievements or engagements which keep us away from narrow selfish desires and possessive greed... spiritualism in this broad sense includes humanity and altruism values such as generosity, compassion, forgiveness, empathy etc. apart from introspection for self awareness.

Definitely spiritual. Materialism only fills a void for a short time before we want more and more. Its like an insatiable appetite. A spiritual life (not necessarily religious) fills that void with a more satisfying life. Satisfied with what you already have and a much deeper, richer perspective and respect for nature and life in general.
