I love to write poetry and would like to write songs but i am not sure how the two connect if at all - please any info would be helpful, thank you. ~~~ silverchick75 ~~~

A song is generally longer and more to the point. A song also has to have a melody.

I write both poems and lyrics and find that with a song you will generally find that as the person above said it will be longer and more to the point but also have rhythm changes within the song so where a poems stanzas will generally be consistent and songs will not. you also have to account for the type of music that the lyrics are going to go with after all there is no sense writing a song about flowers if you have death metal music going with it (although it would be an interesting combination I am sure.) For me I tend to have a song in my head that I add lyrics to rather than have a poem in my head that i am adding music to.

When you write a song, you think to adapt the words to a melody, to instruments and to human voice. It is quite different from writing a poem that is often meant to be read, not heard.

if you listen to the words in songs most of them rhyme. songs are poems set to music. people who write songs dont necessarily write the music for it. some singers and bands write their own songs. more often songs are written by someone and given to the band or person the writer wants to do the song.
