The sounds only works on yahoo messenger when the IM window is buried or minimized. Is there a way to have the sound work during sending and receiving of messages all the time?

Have you tried to go to your friends list , click on messenger, then preferences and then alerts and sounds make sure that it is checked for messages play sounds when chat try that

Go to megaphone on task bar and right click, open Volume Control and make sure all mutes are off and all volumes at least half way up.
