Its incredible how little the people who answer in the preschool section actually know about how children of this age learn. They cant learn by being pushed. They can only do what they are developmentally capable of, for example, you can promote their fine motor skills, ready for writing, bu providing suitable activities like threading and crayons, but boys dont develop the flexibility in their wrists to be able to write comfortably until they are much older, perhaps 6 or 7. So, children in preschool benefit from learning about the things which interest them and which are developmentally appropriate. They learn by being active and from each other. They dont learn by being told unless they have a secure understanding of the thing they are being told about, so all learning must take place in a context they can relate to their own understanding of the world. I dont know how some of you who purport to be Kindy teachers hold down a job, especially when you cant even speak English. You should do some relevant qualifications. :-).

learn morality, learn how to write, study, read and all basics before they all go to primary school. if it werent our kinder teachers, the primary school teachers will have a lot of troubles! so they should thank us kinder teachers for taking some of their loads! the children will have enough preparation to go to primary school without any worries! (thanks to us kinder teachers again). i would like to teach a quiet class (of course for most kinder teachers agree). BUT mostly what i hope for a class is REMEMBER what i had taught them. sometimes i scared that they might forgotten what they had learnt. but i hope my students wont forget!

Im not a Kindergarten teacher but I have a son in Kindergarten and have had some conversations with his teacher as Im a preschool teacher and wanted to know her opinion of the above question. Her biggest concern was fine motor control. This is actually a "complaint" in the older grades as well. Childrens hands tiring, poor penmanship, poor pencil grip, poor scissors skills, etc. So if we, as preschool teachers, should push anything...its fine motor development. I actually plan multipe fine motor activities various times throughout the day. I fit it in whenever and whereever possible. A few years back, Kindergarten was more like preschool and they often had many of the common fine motor activities planned for their class...however, with the push for testing and academics, this Kindergarten teacher has stated she had to cut many many activities...art activities, sensory activities, etc and that is where most children will explore with their fine motor muscles the most. There are only a few children who will independently work with puzzles, scissors, etc. The art and the sensory tended to draw more of the children.

How to spell there first and last name, there address, phone number, DOB. there ABC"S being able to recognize all the letters maybe even being able to place in correct order. Being able to recognize numbers and able to count to 100... Colors and shapes.... Hope this helps...
