I am breeding rats for snake food. I use the babies when they are young sometimes. So If I use all of the mothers babies can I impregnate her immediatly after the babies are gone?. Can she get pregnant while she is feeding her babies as well? Is it bad for the rat if she is pregnant while nursing?. Anyways: Answers ONLY. I am asking a question, NOT looking for your opinion. A rat will go into heat as soon as the last kitten or pup is born. That is why it is so important to separate the mother rat from all other male rats BEFORE she has babies. Boy rats can make great dads, but you cant stop them from making the mom pregnant again, so its best to take them out. Baby rats need to stay with their mom until they are 5 - 6 weeks old. But if the mom gets pregnant again so soon, she will abandon the first babies when they are only 3 weeks old so she can take care of the second ones. It is definitely NOT good for a rat to have multiple litters back-to-back. It is hard on her body, it makes her abandon the first litter, and the second litter wont be as healthy because the mom will already be worn out for the first litter. Rats are supposed to have several months to rest before having another litter. Also, make sure you separate the babies from the mom when they are 5 weeks old so that they dont impregnate the mom or each other. Edit to add: Rat fanciers in the USA usually call rats "pups". Fanciers in the UK and Australia usually call them "kittens". Other people call them "rittens", "eepers" and other cute terms. "Kittens" and "pups" are BOTH correct terms.

A doe will have a post-partum heat..meaning she will have a heat RIGHT after birthing a litter. If she is still with a male (which is risky to the newborns) she CAN get pregnant right away. It is stressful for her to nurse one litter while she is pregnant with anaother. Not a good idea if you are trying to produce many offspring. She should be left with the litter until the are 4-5 weeks, then she should be given a month before being placed with a male again. that give the next litter a better chance at being healthy. However, you COULD put her right back with a male after weaning the one litter and she will be pregnant again within 2 weeks. If you used them before they were weaned, then she would come into heat again sooner. A rest period between one litter and the next is a good idea. I have a friend that breeds feeder mice and has found that they produce better quality and more kits after a rest period. **And yes, people...they are called "kittens" or "kits".

ummm...rats do have kittens, thats what their babies are called smart ones... sorry i was talking to some of the other people who aswered! Anyway if they are with another male, they have kittens aout 20-24 days later. so yes to your ?. By the way my rat had a litter of kittes and they are really cute, how can you kill them? thats just mean, you should reconsider what your doing!!!! just feed the snake crickets, bugs and sometimes tiny animals!!!

Pregnant while nursing is bad, in my experience, because the second litter will usually be born before the first litter is weaned. But yes, as everyone has said, pretty much as soon as shes given birth, she can get pregnant again.

Youre going to burn out your does faster than anything. shell go back into heat 24 hours after she has her babies, and being pregnant would probably cause her to abandon her current litter, leaving you with either a bunch of pinkies to get rid of quickly, or shell savage them to get the proper nutrition she needs. Im not trying to pass a judgement on you or anything, I do own snakes and I do obviously need to feed them. Its in your best interest for profit to be feeding your rats something nutritious, those rat seed mixes are horrible for rats, and lead to sickly looking feeders, something Id personally never purchase for my snakes. Feed lab blocks which are soy based, and give the rats all the nutrition they need without the ability for them to pick out the tasty things. also, I know you said no links, but this link is all about rat reproduction from a lady who is very respected in the pet rat community. Just please be responsible with your animals, they are living, even if they are snake food (as is the problem with me having pet rats and pet snakes. I have a heart for both)

UGH RATS HAVE PUPS NOT KITTENS. And no they cannot impregnate her while they are still pinkies they reach sexual maturity around 4-7 weeks depending on the baby itself.
