It took me 4 days to litter train my rat. I use a small box and small animal litter (by habitrail for hamsters and other small animals, it looks like cat litter.) What you do is you need to make sure that the litter in the box and the bedding in the rest of the cage are different. Then, pick up a few pieces of the poo, and place them in the litter box. Next, completely clean the rest of the bedding out of the cage and replace it. Place the rat in the litter box so it knows its there and will smell its feces. Everytime the rat goes outside of the box, pick up the poo, put it in the box, then place the rat in the box. The rat should soon understand that this is the place to use the bathroom. If you find this isnt working, remove ALL shavings from the cage and simply leave the litter box. The rat will not want to walk in its own urine and feces and will have to go in the litter box (make sure you had some feces already in there, like stated before.) Rats are naturally very clean creatures and will quickly learn that if they use this one spot that it will keep their cage clean. It may take as much as 2 weeks to completly train your rat, but it is worth it in the end. Hope this helps!

Suggestion from website.....link included. I think the hardest thing to train your rat is litter training. It is well worth the effort because in the end it will save you alot of money on bedding. I use the bottom of a kleenx box for the litter box but you can find a plastic one at pet stores. Put a little bedding in the bottom of the litter box and then place all the turds in the box. Every time you see a few terds outside of the box place them in the litter box. This may take a while but itll work. Your rat will get used to smelling the turds in the box and will eventually relize thats were they should go to the bathroom. Good luck!
