I am going to buy a hamster for a friend at a local petstore. What am I to look for in a healthy pick??? ~~~ cm ~~~

Here are some tips: a˜ºWhen you go to pick out a hamster, make sure he has all the fur in which he is suppose to have. *No patchy or red spots!* a˜ºIf theyre all sleeping..its really hard to tell. Look for one that doesnt look too weak or petite. But, Ive heard remarkable stories of people picking sick gerbils..and them restoring there health!!! But, if you want all money worth, dont do that. a˜º Make sure you find one that doesnt look dehydrated. This also goes with my second pa˜ºint. a˜º If your friends active or loud, maybe you should buy the hamster that is on the wheel being loud..and you guessed it active! Hamster are really fun!! I hope you pick the BEST of them all!! Some stores carry unhealthy pets, but most likely yours will be just fine!!

get a teddy bear hamster!!! they are so sweet, unlike dwarf hamsters, they bite. mine is so smart. look for one that has a pink or non furry tail, this means that they arent adults yet. Teddy bears have the cutest widdle noses! okay, bye. goodluck on the hammy!

/Pets/Usual-Pets-- pet stores are one of the WORST places to buy pets from.. they usually come from warehouse breeders so are not handled.. if the staff uses gloves to pick them up.. dont buy one.. try your local SPCA or animal shelter.. better prices.. more honest.. and you may even get a cheap used cage..

well first of all that lilthunk... person is totally wrong!! i got a teddy bear hamster that just looked so cute! it didnt bite. well i brought it home and it bite the crap out of my sis and she was pouring blood. (the hammy bit her finger) a few days later the hammy had major diarrhea. it stunk real bad and the hamster peed on me a lot. well i took it back a few days after that and got a dwarf hamster. she was about 2 inches in length and about a half inch in height. she has not bit anyone in my family yet! i have had her for about 2 or 3 months! well she bites but it doesnt even hurt my 3 year old nephew!! lol : ) she loves to play and sleeps on my chest. she doesnt run or try to run away like that dumb teddy bear hamster i had! she licks me a lot which might sound a lil creepy to those non hamster lovers! i give her kisses 2! well i hope this info helped!

Dont go to petco or petsmart, go to a local small store. the big stores tend to not care for small rodents and they have bedding with ceder and pine oil, which is REALLY bad for rodents lungs. When i got my hamster i picked the one that was running and active, dont be fooled if the hamster bites you when you get it , its just scared,confused, and lonely. My hamster gets up and waits for me when i enter my room, its so cute. Evan though she bit me before now we have a strong bond. Good luck with your hamster! :)

Yes, despite what people are saying, you CAN find a healthy pet a petstore! Of course, adopting is always, always the better choice because youre saving a life, rather than giving the store another spot to fill. Look for a hamster that is active and doesnt bite. It should be eating and pooping, without any nasal discharge, bald patches, or damaged feet/ears. You should always ask to pick it up and handle any animal before you decide to buy it - dont try one, play with quite a few, and decide which one seems the most playful. Listless, biting, or isolated hamsters are probably not the best choice. Dont listen to the pet store - if theres a hamster all by itself, it could be sick, overly agressive and unsocialized, no matter what they try and tell you.
