Rodents : Is It Harmful For My Hamster To Chew On Her Plastic Tubes

My hamster chews on her plastic tubes and at night it bothers everybody because it is rather loud. Are the little bits of plastic that come off the tubes harmful? She sometimes eats them but will too many make her sick? ~~~ Starship ~~~

This is not good. Ingesting plastic can cause instentinal blockage, which would lead to death. Also, theres a high chance your hamster is going to escape. You need to find other things for your hamster to chew on(dog cookies, wood chews, pine cones, etc). If that doesnt work, get rid of the tubes.

If she chews to many bits, and gets a big bit, she could choke. It would be a random, like 10% thing if she got sick, but chocking should be the big concern.

yeah im guessing the plastic isnt good for it especially considering hamsters are so little you might want to take them out and replace them w/ like paper towel rolls and stuff they can climb in them my hamsters seemed to like doing that hope this helps

Its not good for any other animals or people to eat plastic, so it cant be good for your little hamster to eat either. I would get her something else to crawl through, just to be safe. It couldnt hurt anything.

Your hamster is actually trying to file down her teeth. Give it something healthful to chew and youve eliminated many problems. Your hamster is a rodent. Rodents chew walls, pvc, cardboard, etc. Thinking back, my hamster chewed a hole in its habitrail. I replaced the part, found the hamster and supplied chew sticks and a wheel. My grandmother threatened death if the rodent ever got out, again.

just as an fye the tubes are not suppose to be attached at night just like the wheel. The reason it is doing this is becuase you newd to by more chews there are wodden stuff to chew on in the pet store go get some and remove the tube from its cage at night and yes it is bad to digest and may make it iill good luck

I have had hamsters all my life. If your hamster is chewing on her plastic tubes you need to but it some chew sticks. Also you can buy cardboard tubes for her to chew on it is safe. After you buy cardboard tubes take the plastic ones out. If she is acting different and not eating take her to the vet. My hamster was doing the same thing till I bought the chew sticks.
