Thanks for the input. My girl is 11 and started last summer. She is only using pads at this point. She probably wont wear tampons till 13 or so. She isnt ready. ~~~ thegroovyoneofall ~~~

I went on tampons on my first period. I hated the feeling of pads. It took me a wee while to get used to it but I think theyre great. I was 13 when I got my period, first day of High School too.

Id offer both the option of pads and tampons when she got her first period. I would explain what I personally like and dislike about both. Offer to buy her both and let her test which ones she likes for herself. Wether or not you use tampons is really a personal decision.

First off how old is you daughter? Id say whenever. Especially if she is still younger and Ill explain this. I got mine early(at 9) and hated it and couldnt swim in the summer and it bummed me out like Id cry when my mom and brother would go and leave me at the house. I was 11 or 12 tho. Its no biggie using tampons over pads. Its not like some only adult women can do. I would suggest tampons during the day and pads for over night, even though its been proven to be ok to wear them overnight.

Whenever she is comfortable with using them. When she understands how to use them and knows about changing them - but thats the same with pads really. I wouldnt place a restriction one way or the other based on age.

If your daughter has not started her period yet, when the time comes, let her know about the different kinds of products and advantages of each. Answer as many or as few questions as she seems to feel comfortable with. If she is shy about it every box has directions... If she has already started her period, I think it would be fine whatever age she is if/ when she shows an interest. Otherwise, if you are comfortable with it, and think she may benefit from them (for example: she has a required swimming class...) let her know they are available to her. I was extremely shy, so it was very difficult for me to ask my mom about it (after already having had my period for a year or so). My mom would not let me use them even though I was probably at least 14. This was bad for me for a couple of reasons. Mainly, I was running 3-5 miles a day for cross country, and pads can really chafe. Also, my mom gave no good reason for it and it was emotionally isolating. I think the important thing is to give her the option and support her with whatever she decides to use.

Id suggest you teach all this long before she would need them. then have fresh sets in her room for the day she does. note this may be before age 10

Id explain both to her then let her decide. Thats what my mother did for me. I wasnt interested in using tampons at first. But then when the day came that I wanted to go swimming...I decided to make the switch :) However, Ive had friends who by the time they were in their 20s STILL werent using tampons. Its just a decision that each woman needs to make for themselves.

You shouldnt make her. You should let her try it when she feels like it. Some girls stay on pads for there full life. I started using there about 2 years after my period started but I only use then for Karate, Jujitsu, Swimming and Bed. I prefer pads. Let her decide on her own.

Let your daughter get used to having periods before getting her to use tampons. Try a year after her first period. When she does start using them, make sure that she knows how to put them in PROPERLY, otherwise she will feel extremely uncomfortable.

you can only offer them... you cannot make her use them some girls dont like to, my sister is 24 and still refuses to use them my best friend is 25 and the same.. she hates them me on the other hand, i love them so just give her the option ask her if she would rather use them instead of pads.. but encourage her to wear pads at night and pantiliners with the tampons. if she has had her period already then just ask her good luck

its better to use pads and tampons but my mom never bought up the subject til i asked...i was about 15 she knew it was better for me when i was at school or out for the night but when i was home she told me it was better to wear a pad to help w/ the flow...and she explained the risks and how i could get sick if i dont take care of myself and take it out on time i think around 14 or 15 ( i didnt start til i was 14 almost 15 either so its kinda unfair for me to say any younger idk how ppl are then w/ their monthly friend) i dont see why its so bad for girl to wear tampons the one girl i went to high school w/ her mom didnt allow at all even now shes 19 and her mom freaks if she finds a tampon in her room but her mom wears them

Its hard to give an age, it depends a lot on how old the girl is when she starts her periods. Personally, I would encourage my daughter to use pads to begin with, as it would easier for her to get to know whats going on, how heavy it is etc. Also, to begin with, a girls periods are likely to be very irregular, making it much harder to choose the right absorbancy for a tampon. After a few months, maybe up to a year, when she has got to know her body a little better and knows what to expect, then I would offer her the choice. It depends a bit on circumstances too - if your daughter clearly dislikes pads, then dont force her to use them. If she enjoys swimming or other sports, then give her the option sooner, but maybe still suggest she uses pads at other times until she has a better idea of what to expect.

My mom wouldnt let me use tampons when I first started, even though I wanted to. I was in 5th grade when I started, and started using tampons in 6th grade. I hid it from her for a long time because I thought shed be mad. Anyways its more of a personal choice.
