Toddler Preschooler : What To Do Wiht A 4 Year Old Who Wakes In The Middle Of The Night And Roams The House
He goes down stairs to the Kitchen and eats and drinks. Sometimes, he even hides the evidence of these escapades. What can be done to get him to sleep through the night or at the least, wake my husband or I up when he does wake up? ~~~ V ~~~
Best Answer To Toddler Preschooler Question
To keep him in his room, try a baby doorknob protector or child gate. As far as waking up, use baby monitors, or do something "crazy" like stack noisy objects or attach a bell to his bedroom door so you can hear when it opens.

Answer 1Is he really awake?? Or is he sleep walking? Can you put an extra tall baby gate at his door? I know my 7 year old couldn't figure out how to open one of them, lol.
Answer 2To keep him in his room, try a baby doorknob protector or child gate. As far as waking up, use baby monitors, or do something "crazy" like stack noisy objects or attach a bell to his bedroom door so you can hear when it opens.
Answer 3put a small battery bell above his door and put the ringer in your bedroom, this will wake you up. Persionaly, I would start on a ragieme of warm bath with lavinder oil before bed and a small amount of lavinder spray on his pillow to help him sleep. This worked for my 3 Y/O daughter
Answer 4Put a baby gate at the top of the stairs or at the end of the hall or in front of his door. Put locks on the cabinets (it's a terrible habit to eat at night and can lead to obesity and major dental problems) and a lock on the fridge if you don't want to gate the house off. If he can't get into the food, he can't eat it. You could also do a knob cover on his door so he can't get out. If he has to go to the bathroom, put a little potty in his room and tell him to use that if he needs to go. It's not safe for him to be roaming, and if he's sleep walking, he could leave the house at night and wander down the street. God only knows what could happen to him! Nip the problem before it gets worse.
Answer 5we have a 3 1/2 year old who would also wake up in the middle of the night, he would just take his pillow and blanket to sleep on the couch but i still didnt like it, i was always worried he would unlock the doors and walk outside or something. you never know with small kids. so we put up a baby gate at the end off the hallway with that up he can only use the restroom or come into our room he cant get to any other parts of the house. when he first went to the big boy bed he wasnt potty trained at night so we would put the gate in his doorway so he couldnt leave his room if he got up. im not sure how your house is set up but they have so many baby gates in so many sizes im sure you can find somethign to work
Answer 6I would probably find a way to prevent him from getting out of his room. If possible, I'd start with a baby gate, but if you think he can get through that, there are also door alarms. They attach to the door and the frame so that when the door opens, a bell/dinger goes off. If you don't like either of those ideas, I guess my suggestions would be to first, give him a snack before bed so maybe he'll sleep through the night, or secondly, put a baby monitor in your kitchen so you can hopefully hear him when he gets up.
Answer 7Put a baby gate up about 6 inches off the floor, so it's tricky for him to climb over.
Answer 8If he's hiding evidence, he's probably not sleep walking, lol. You don't want to block him in, in case he needs to use the bathroom at night, so I wouldn't use a gate. Unless you can put one in such a way that he can get to the bathroom and to bed only. You might consider a baby moniter so that you can hear if he gets up. One thing that jumps to mind is that he's getting up because he's hungry! Perhaps he needs a good, filling snack later in the evening so that his tummy will stay full until morning. Also, you could give him a sippy cup (or special spill proof character cup with a straw) with water in it to keep at his bed side. If he wakes up in the night thirsty, he has something to drink right there. Tell him that he shouldn't get up and wander around the house at night, it's not safe. If he needs you, he can always come and get you. I liked the suggestions about bells, but if you have other children, will these wake them up too? What you don't need is two kids up at 3 am, lol.
Answer 9Make sure you get a gate on his door. but you gotta also make sure his room is TOTALLY safe. then don't worry about it. just make sure he can't get around the house alone. if he is in his room and it's totally safe, then let him get up. you sleep soundly kowing he is safe. when he gets tired again, he's lay down and fall asleep. you may wake up and see him asleep on the floor with his toys. but he's safe.
